Castle / Protection

One of the only things that I have really gotten excited about lately is food storage. I have a little bit of money and have felt so strongly that I need to be prepared for my kids' sake. What good would a little money stored up be if we couldn't eat for some reason? So, I have been amassing cans and cans of food. I am doing it gradually...looking for deals, canning some myself, ordering some from the church, and ordering others from online companies. I am a little over half-way to a six-month supply (which is my goal). We have a tiny house or it would be a year's supply.

Speaking of tiny house, I am still working on where to store it all. I have many ideas/plans and it will all get stored eventually, just takes time. Right now, however, they are lined up along a wall in my bedroom. My beautiful K came up with a great analogy. She saw all those silver cans lined up and said, "Wow, Mom. It looks like a castle." Then, she added, "It is like a castle, because a castle provides protection and all this food for our family provides protection for us." Well said, K. Well said.

(What a perceptive girl, eh? I am her mom and could be biased, but I think she is pretty darn smart!)

Impressive castle, and K is right. Don't you just love to sit and stare at it? I sit and stare at mine sometimes and I think, WOW I'm actually doing it!

Stash it under the beds! I don't like finding the random things that wind up there anyway, and if you put the cans there, then toys and other assorted items don't wind up there on accident. It's out of the way and totally accessible.

K is such a sweetheart. I know she gets it from watching her amazing mother.

You are so awesome! I wish I was as organized as you are with food storage. I need to be better about food storage. I don't know how long ours could sustain us. Maybe a month? I need to get better. You've inspired me!!

Good for you for getting the food and good for K for thinking of an intelligent analogy.

I'm trying to catch up on mine too and I am going for 6 months too because a years supply for 7 people would take over our house but maybe I will want to once we reach 6 months!

Yeah for both of you! Though I have never met her, I think K is pretty smart, too!

We converted the coat closet into a food storage pantry. It's nice and deep, so we can fit quite a bit in there.

One problem with huge cans, though. If you open it and don't eat it all right away it goes bad. That's why I'd rather keep multiple smaller cans.
