General Conference

I so loved listening to General Conference this weekend! The kids are not "required" to watch it. They are supposed to be listening if President Hinckley speaks and all of the first session on Sunday. But, they chose to watch the whole thing, minus about an hour on Sunday afternoon when we finally demanded they go play as they were getting a little crazy and restless. 7 hours of church in two days for a 5 and 7 year old! I was impressed.

A few of my favorite ideas from conference this year included:

  • Elder Scott: When there is "no response" to a prayer..it is evidence of His trust in you!
  • Elder Holland: "No misfortune is so bad that whining about it won't make it worse."
  • Sister Parkin: He commands us to be grateful because being grateful makes us happy.
  • President Faust: Forgiveness frees up energy used to hold grudges. Anguish not Anger. Hurt not Hate.
  • Brother Anderson: It's true, isn't it? Then what else matters?
  • Elder Eyring: Seek the Lord early in the DAY, as well as in life.
  • President Hinckley: Use Conference talks for FHE.

These are just a few of the nuggets for me from this conference! What impressed you?

I love conference too! The kids were a little restless this time, so I didn't see as much as I'd hoped (another great reason for the Ensign!), but I still enjoyed it!
•Elder Holland: We must be careful when speaking to a child - it affects their faith in us and their faith in God
•Elder Bednar: An occasional sprinkle or dip in the brine cannot bring the transformation!
•Pres Faust: Forgiveness is the most liberating gift we can give ourselves.
•Elder Oaks: "Festering is destructive, forgiveness is divine"
•Elder Ballard: We love scriptures we spend time with - we need to balance our reading.

And these are the beginning! What a great spiritual recharge!

hi there -- thank you for your kinds words today on my blog. yes, it was a bummer that our church burned up, but it will be alright. we are just meeting somewhere else for now. our ward is still together, just in a different location. some of us joke now, should we meet at the church or your home? we are trying to make the best of it. you know what? a lot of us are still using the church parking lot as a great meeting spot to gather before an activity then carpool or whatever. why not still use the charred up area as a meeting point before going off to our outings? it works.

that is so neat how you get to have your own primary CTR 6 boy in your home. i am so enjoying being a primary teacher. these little ones are touching my life and i feel lucky.

thank you for posting some of those conference talks' quotes. i had thought president hinckley quoted "it's true, isn't it? then what else matters?" thanks for clearing up who said it.

God bless,

I'm not LDS, but I found your quotes interesting. The one from Elder Scott about "no response" to a prayer was a unique idea. I've always thought, though, that "no response" often is just a way that God teaches us patience or tells us that the timing isn't right yet.

Thanks, also, for commenting on my blog. Reading about your enjoyment of time spent just enjoying the sunset with your kids, and about your "math brain" makes me think you would be an excellent homeschool mom.

Your hectic life makes me think also of this verse - 1 Sam 15:22-23. It can be easy to get caught up in making a "sacrifice" of our time to many good things, and leave no time for the main things God has called us to obedience in. Maybe you should make a list of what God would consider priorities that he requires obedience in first and then focus your energy and time on those things. (Hope that came out helpful and not 'preachy') :)
